Creative New Zealand has clarified that its proposed funding restructure for the arts sector will remain in place until 2028, addressing concerns raised by the Marlborough arts community. The agency confirmed that the changes, which aim to streamline support for artists and cultural organizations, are not being implemented immediately. Instead, the new structure will be reviewed and adjusted over the next few years.
The confusion arose after an email sent to local councils and arts groups was misinterpreted as an immediate change to funding processes. Creative NZ has since clarified that the restructure is part of a long-term strategy to better allocate resources and support emerging talent. The agency emphasized that the current funding framework will remain active until the new system is fully operational.
This clarification comes after months of discussions between Creative NZ and regional arts organizations. The restructure was initially announced in 2023 as part of a broader effort to modernize how the arts sector receives government support. While some groups expressed concerns about the potential impact on funding stability, Creative NZ has maintained that the changes are designed to ensure long-term sustainability. The next review of the restructure is expected in 2026.
