A man was found dead after being buried in an avalanche in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park on Sunday. The incident occurred in the area known as Hooker Valley, a popular hiking and skiing destination. Emergency services were called to the scene following reports of a missing person. Rescue teams located the man trapped under snow, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The National Park Authority has issued a warning to hikers and skiers to exercise caution in the region. Officials noted that snow conditions have been unstable in recent days, increasing the risk of avalanches. A spokesperson said, "Weather patterns have led to unpredictable snowfall, making the terrain more hazardous." The body is expected to be recovered in the coming days.
This is the second avalanche-related fatality in the area this winter. Last month, a group of climbers was rescued after being caught in a similar incident. Experts have called for increased awareness and preparedness among visitors. The park remains open, but visitors are advised to check weather forecasts and follow safety guidelines.
