Environment Canterbury has announced that 80% of monitored swimming spots in South Canterbury and the Waitaki region are considered safe for use this summer. The assessment, based on water quality testing, indicates that the majority of locations meet the required standards for recreational swimming.
The report covers 23 monitored sites across the region, with 18 rated as suitable for swimming. Only five locations were found to require further monitoring or improvement. The findings come as local authorities prepare for the summer season, which typically sees increased use of waterways for recreation.
Water quality in the Waitaki River and surrounding lakes has been a focus of environmental monitoring in recent years. Previous reports highlighted concerns about pollution and nutrient levels, prompting targeted clean-up efforts. This year’s assessment shows improvements, with key indicators such as E. Coli levels and turbidity meeting or exceeding safety thresholds.
The Waitaki River, a major water source in the region, has seen ongoing management efforts to balance agricultural runoff with recreational use. Local councils and environmental agencies have worked together to implement best practices for water treatment and public health. The latest results reflect the effectiveness of these measures, ensuring safer conditions for swimmers.
