Southland’s general practice services will operate for nearly 60 hours a week starting in 2025, thanks to increased funding announced in Budget 2025. The expansion of Te Hau o Te Ora’s after-hours GP service aims to reduce the strain on emergency departments and overburdened general practices.
The new funding, part of the government’s broader healthcare reforms, will allow clinics to extend their operating hours significantly. This change is expected to provide more timely care for patients outside regular working hours. The initiative follows years of growing pressure on Southland’s healthcare system, particularly in emergency departments that have frequently faced overcrowding.
Southland has long struggled with limited healthcare resources, especially in rural areas. The region’s emergency departments have reported high patient volumes, leading to longer wait times and increased stress on medical staff. The expansion of GP services is seen as a key step in addressing these challenges. Health officials have emphasized the importance of preventive care and early intervention to reduce the need for emergency services. The new hours will be implemented gradually, with full operation expected by the end of 2025.
